Loft Insulation Case Study — Chimney Loft Insulation With Portable Work Lighting, Bradford

Emma's front and rear bedrooms, split by a central chimney breast, both cooled quickly. We insulated the 40m² floor on both sides of the chimney to a full 300mm depth.

What we found

  • A central brick chimney breast dividing the loft floor
  • Bare joists and dusty ceiling surfaces across most of the space
  • A hatch close to the chimney that restricted the working area
  • No continuous insulation around the chimney or roof supports

The problem

Emma contacted us after noticing that the front and rear bedrooms both cooled rapidly, even though they were separated by the chimney breast. The loft floor was exposed on both sides and had no effective insulation.

The chimney and nearby hatch created an awkward working area, but they also left several narrow heat-loss paths that needed to be treated properly.

Our assessment

The loft floor measured approximately 40m². We recommended a 300mm Knauf glass mineral wool installation across both sides of the chimney breast, using 100mm between the joists and 200mm cross-laid above.

The installation

Portable work lighting was positioned near the chimney so the team could cut accurately around the brickwork and hatch. The 100mm base layer was installed between the joists and fitted into the narrow sections around the chimney.

The 200mm top layer was then laid across the completed areas, maintaining appropriate separation around the chimney and leaving the hatch clear. The eaves ventilation route was checked before the final clean-up.

The result

The loft was left with consistent insulation on both sides of the chimney and around the hatch. Emma reported that both bedrooms felt more comfortable and the temperature difference between them was reduced.

The installation helped to

  • Improved coverage around a central chimney breast
  • Reduced heat loss from the front and rear bedrooms
  • Improved insulation around the hatch
  • Maintained safe clearance around brickwork
  • Delivered a consistent 300mm finished depth
