Loft Insulation Case Study — Low-Roof Loft Insulated Around Timber Bracing, Sheffield

Andrew's low-roof loft was draughty in windy weather, with awkward bracing that had left previous attempts incomplete. We cut 300mm of Knauf glass mineral wool accurately around the braces and wiring.

What we found

  • A low roof structure with large diagonal braces across the loft
  • Open joists through the main floor area
  • A narrow side route formed from loose boards
  • Old wiring and timber intersections that required careful fitting

The problem

Andrew contacted us because the upstairs rooms felt cold and draughty, particularly during windy weather. The loft had awkward structural bracing and loose access boards, but no effective insulation layer.

The open joists allowed heat to escape freely, while the braces and wiring had made previous attempts at insulation incomplete.

Our assessment

The loft floor measured approximately 43m². We recommended 300mm of Knauf glass mineral wool, cut accurately around the braces and wiring. The side access route was retained where safe, and no insulation was compressed beneath the boards.

The installation

The first 100mm layer was installed between the joists, with individual pieces fitted around cables and timber intersections. The team avoided covering junction points that might require future access.

The 200mm top layer was cross-laid across the loft, with careful cuts around the large braces. The side boards remained usable and the ventilation route at the eaves was left clear.

The result

The finished loft had full-depth insulation around the structural bracing and across the main floor. Andrew reported fewer draughts upstairs and a more stable temperature during colder weather.

The installation helped to

  • Improved insulation around difficult bracing
  • Reduced draughts in the upstairs rooms
  • Maintained access to wiring and roof timbers
  • Retained a usable side route
  • Created continuous 300mm coverage
