So the honest answer is: yes to boarding, but not to boarding directly on the joists in a modern, well-insulated loft.
Why laying boards on the joists is a problem
Insulation works by trapping still air within the wool. Squash it and that air is forced out, and the material’s thermal performance drops sharply. The difficulty is one of geometry: ceiling joists in most homes are around 100mm deep, but a properly insulated loft floor is much thicker than that. For mineral wool, 270mm is the benchmark commonly used — well above joist height.
Bolt boards straight onto the joists and everything above joist level gets compressed down to 100mm. You end up with tidy storage sitting on badly weakened insulation. It looks fine and performs poorly.
How raised loft boarding solves it
A raised loft boarding system fixes spacers or a support grid to the joists to lift the boarded deck above the full depth of insulation. The wool keeps its loft, its trapped air and its performance, while you gain a firm, level floor for storage on top. It is the standard way to have both a fully insulated loft and somewhere to keep boxes, cases and seasonal items.
If your loft is currently under-insulated, boarding is a natural moment to bring it up to depth. Storage, not a habitable room
It is worth being clear about what a boarded loft is for. Raised boarding creates storage. It does not turn a loft into a bedroom, office or playroom. A habitable conversion is a separate building project with its own structural, insulation, fire-safety, access and building-control requirements. Treating a boarded storage area as living space is neither safe nor compliant, so keep the two ideas distinct.
For storage itself, boarding suits a wide range of homes, including many straightforward post-1965 properties where the roof is dry and the loft is easy to access.
Keep ventilation and access in mind
Two practical points. First, boarding should never be pushed tight into the eaves — the airflow path at the edge of the roof must stay clear, or you risk trapping moisture and encouraging condensation. A good installation keeps the eaves open and boards only the central, usable area rather than wall to wall. Second, boarding over the loft covers up the deck, so it is sensible to check the insulation, timbers and any services underneath before the boards go down — a leak or damp patch is far easier to deal with before it is hidden than after. A loft inspection confirms the loft is dry and sound first, and flags anything that ought to be put right before the space is closed over.

Boarding over loft insulation is fine and often worthwhile — but only on a raised system that keeps the boards off the wool. Crushing the insulation to fit boards onto the joists trades warmth for storage in a way you will feel on your heating. Raise the deck, keep the eaves clear, and treat the result as storage rather than a room.
