The short answer
Yes — in most lofts you can add insulation over what is already there. As long as the existing layer is dry, in good condition and free of pests and mould, a new layer is simply laid across the joists on top of it to build the depth up. You rarely need to strip a sound loft back to bare boards before improving it.
The exception matters, though: if the material underneath is wet, mouldy, rodent-fouled or crushed flat, covering it over traps the problem rather than solving it. Those lofts need clearing first.
When topping up is the right call
A loft insulation top-up suits the many homes that were insulated years ago to a shallower standard and still have honest, dry material in place. If your existing layer is somewhere around the tops of the joists and shows no signs of damp or disturbance, adding a fresh cross-layer over it is usually the simplest and most cost-effective improvement you can make.
The new layer normally goes on at right angles to the joists. That covers the timber — which otherwise acts as a thermal bridge — and lifts the total depth towards the benchmark for the product. For mineral wool insulation, 270mm is the figure commonly used as a target, built up from the layer between the joists plus the cross-layer over them. Other materials have their own specifications, so the right depth is confirmed against the product data sheet.
This approach works well in most post-1965 homes, where roofs are typically dry and straightforward and the existing insulation is often simply too thin by modern standards.
When the old layer has to come out first
Laying new over old only makes sense if the old is sound. Removal is the better route when you find:
- Damp or water-stained insulation. Wet wool loses much of its performance and stays wet if buried. Find the cause — usually a roof leak or condensation — before anything new goes down.
- Mould growth. Blackened or musty material points to a moisture problem that a fresh layer will hide, not cure.
- Rodent or pest evidence. Droppings, nesting and fouling are a contamination and hygiene issue. This material should be removed rather than sealed under new insulation.
- Heavy compression. Insulation crushed flat by years of foot traffic or stored boxes has lost its trapped air and much of its value. Topping up over a compressed base gives a poor result.
In these cases a loft insulation removal clears the space so the loft can be inspected, dried, cleaned and then re-insulated properly.
How to tell which situation you are in
You can get a rough idea yourself with a torch. Look for staining, dampness to the touch, a musty smell, droppings or areas squashed flat. If everything looks dry, even and undisturbed, you are probably a good candidate for a top-up.
If anything looks off — or you simply want certainty — a loft inspection checks the depth, condition, moisture and ventilation and gives you a written recommendation. The Energy Saving Trust is a useful reference for current guidance on roof and loft insulation more generally.
Don’t bury a ventilation or boarding problem
Two quick cautions. First, adding depth slows heat escaping into the loft, which makes the space colder and can raise condensation risk if airflow is poor — insulation and ventilation are best considered together. The honest bottom line
For a dry, sound loft, insulating over the existing layer is usually the sensible, economical choice. The judgement that matters is condition, not age alone — and where the old material is damp, mouldy, fouled or compressed, clearing it first is what protects the work you are paying for.
