Older roofs ask for a different kind of care
Insulating an older home is not fundamentally different from insulating a modern one — you still want to slow heat escaping up through the ceiling — but the way older roofs were built changes some of the details. Many were designed to breathe, letting moisture move gently through the structure rather than being sealed against it. Insulate one as though it were a modern, airtight roof and you can trap that moisture, so the material you choose, the ventilation you keep and the inspection you do first all matter more.

Start with a careful inspection
In an older loft, what you find often matters more than what you plan. Mineral wool remains a perfectly valid, lower-cost choice in many older homes too. Ventilation is central, not optional
The single biggest risk in insulating an older roof is trapping moisture. Adding insulation makes the loft colder, and a cold, poorly ventilated older roof is exactly where condensation and damp timbers appear. Keeping — or restoring — the airflow is essential: clear eaves so air enters low, adequate outlets higher up, and insulation held back from the edges rather than crammed into them. Where the ventilation is inadequate or has been sealed up over the years, loft ventilation work restores the paths the roof relies on to stay dry. Listed and traditional buildings
Extra care applies to listed and traditional buildings. There may be consent requirements, and conservation good practice generally favours reversible, breathable, sympathetic approaches over sealing a historic roof tight. Practical points to expect
In older lofts, awkward access, uneven or undersized joists, old wiring and irregular spaces are common, so the work is often more bespoke than in a modern home. Cold-water pipes and tanks are insulated so they do not freeze once the warm air below is held back, downlights and flues are kept clear, and the eaves are always left open.
