Mineral wool, by contrast, is the industry standard — proven, widely available and inexpensive. Choosing between them is less about which is “better” in the abstract and more about breathability, cost, handling and the kind of home you have. Breathability and moisture behaviour

The most talked-about difference is how each handles moisture. Sheep wool is hygroscopic — it can absorb a degree of moisture from the air and release it again as conditions change, without its performance collapsing. This buffering can suit breathable roof constructions where you want materials that work with, rather than against, the way the building manages moisture.

Mineral wool is breathable too, but it is largely non-hygroscopic: it does not readily take up water, and if it becomes genuinely wet through a leak it loses performance until dried. Both are perfectly workable materials; they simply manage humidity differently.

The condensation myth

Here is the honest correction. Sheep wool’s moisture-buffering leads some people to believe it “prevents condensation”. It does not. Condensation in a loft is governed by ventilation and temperature, not by the insulation material. Warm, moist air meeting a cold surface will condense whatever is between the joists. Sheep wool can cope better with humidity, but it is no substitute for adequate airflow, and a poorly ventilated loft can still develop damp and mould with sheep wool in it. Cost

Mineral wool is usually the cheaper option by a clear margin, which is why it remains the default for most loft-floor work. Sheep wool sits at a higher price point, reflecting its natural material and processing. If lowest cost is your priority, mineral wool wins; if you are willing to pay more for a natural fibre, sheep wool becomes a reasonable option.

Handling

For anyone working in the loft, sheep wool is pleasant to handle — soft, non-irritating and free of the fine mineral fibres that make mineral wool itchy and require gloves, eye protection and a mask. This is a modest but real advantage in a loft you expect to visit.

Treatment and durability

Natural wool needs treatment to resist pests and, in some products, to meet fire requirements, so it is worth checking how a specific sheep wool product is treated and classified on its data sheet. Mineral wool’s fire behaviour and pest resistance are well established, though it too should be kept dry and never compressed under boarding. Whichever you choose, the material’s own specification governs the depth — for wool-based products, 270mm is the commonly cited benchmark.

Suitability for older homes

Sheep wool comes into its own in older, breathable properties. In many pre-1920 homes the roof was built to let moisture move through the structure, and a natural, breathable material can be a good fit — provided the ventilation is right. For most homes seeking proven performance at the lowest cost, mineral wool is the sensible default for a loft insulation installation.
