Loft Insulation Case Study — Low-Pitched Loft Insulated Around Structural Supports, Coventry

Priya's low-pitched loft had multiple structural timbers that had put off any full upgrade. We cut 300mm of Knauf glass mineral wool accurately around the supports for continuous coverage without compression.

What we found

  • A low-pitched roof with several vertical and diagonal timber supports
  • Open joist bays across the majority of the loft floor
  • A narrow board route used for access through the structure
  • Restricted working space around the supports and lower roof slopes

The problem

Priya contacted us because the upstairs rooms felt draughty and the heating appeared to have little lasting effect. The loft had multiple structural timbers, which had previously discouraged any full insulation upgrade.

Although a narrow access route had been laid, the surrounding joist bays remained exposed. Heat was passing through the ceiling across almost the entire loft floor.

Our assessment

The loft floor measured approximately 39m². We recommended 300mm of Knauf glass mineral wool, installed in smaller accurately cut sections around the timber supports. The existing access boards were retained where possible.

The installation

The first 100mm layer was fitted between the joists, with individual pieces cut around each vertical support, brace and trimmer. This avoided compression and ensured there were no large uncovered areas around the structure.

A 200mm cross-laid layer was then installed across the top. The team worked around the access boards and low eaves, maintaining a clear ventilation path and leaving the main route through the loft usable.

The result

The completed loft had full-depth insulation around the structural supports and across the previously exposed floor. Priya reported that the upstairs felt less draughty and the rooms stayed comfortable for longer.

The installation helped to

  • Improved insulation around complex timber supports
  • Reduced draughts and cold spots
  • Retained a usable access route
  • Avoided compression around structural timbers
  • Provided a consistent 300mm insulation depth
