Loft Insulation Case Study — SuperFOIL Installation Through a Long Loft With Multiple Supports, Coventry

Priya's long loft had a run of support posts that had blocked previous roof upgrades. We fitted SF19 SuperFOIL around the structure across the 61m² roof pitch, keeping the 9m² access route and existing floor.

What we found

  • The roof space contained a long run of vertical support posts and low side slopes
  • The floor already had mineral wool but several sections had been disturbed near the access route
  • A central walkway provided access through the structural supports
  • Portable lamps were required because the fixed lighting did not reach the far end of the loft

The problem

Priya asked us to improve the loft without removing the existing access route or disturbing the structural supports. The rooms below felt draughty during windy weather and the loft was uncomfortable to enter during winter.

The existing floor insulation offered some protection, but the roof pitch remained exposed. The numerous supports and low working height had prevented a previous roof-level upgrade.

Our assessment

The loft floor measured approximately 45m² and the pitched roof measured approximately 61m². The existing 300mm Knauf floor insulation could be retained and locally repositioned. We recommended installing SF19 SuperFOIL around the full roof pitch while preserving the 9m² boarded access route and working carefully around each support post.

The installation

The access route was checked and temporary protection was added around the hatch. Disturbed floor insulation was repositioned before the roof work started.

SuperFOIL was installed in shorter sections so it could be accurately fitted around the vertical posts, roof braces and lower side slopes. Each section was overlapped and taped before the next area was started.

Portable work lights were moved progressively through the loft. The eaves ventilation path and access to the roof structure were maintained throughout.

The result

The long loft gained a continuous reflective insulation layer despite the complex support arrangement. The central route remained clear, the floor insulation was left intact and the loft felt less draughty and more stable in temperature.

The installation helped to

  • Installed SuperFOIL around multiple structural supports
  • Retained the existing 300mm floor insulation
  • Preserved a safe central access route
  • Reduced draughts within the roof space
  • Improved the finish across a long and difficult loft
