Walsall grew as a Black Country leather and metalworking town, and its housing carries that industrial stamp. Walsall's older terraces often have shallow lofts with awkward access over a stairwell and thin insulation that has settled over decades. The town's large interwar and post-war semi stock across Bloxwich, Palfrey and Willenhall usually carries sound original wool that suits a top-up, frequently with storage boards laid straight onto the joists. Estate and system-built housing can have low roof voids or unusual layouts, while the detached houses around Aldridge offer more generous but sometimes complex roof spaces.
Many older Walsall terraces have very little built-in roof ventilation, so pushing insulation hard into the eaves can trap moisture and cause condensation. We keep the eaves clear and treat ventilation and insulation together. Across the town's mixed stock we check that bathroom and kitchen extractors vent outside rather than into the loft, a common cause of damp staining in Black Country roofs.
